Toshiba Improves Antenna Performance and Reduces Design Time with AWR Software

The Design Challenge

Toshiba Service and Engineering Company designs planar antennas for the Japanese Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB-T) standard used for digital terrestrial TV broadcasting. 

Before adopting AWR Design Environment™, specifically AXIEM 3D planar EM simulation software, Toshiba was designing its antennas using costly cut-and-try prototyping. This manual process took the engineers many days in order to run performance measurements such as antenna radiation pattern. Lengthy design time and costly prototype iterations were painful, limiting the time the design team had for achieving the best performance from their antenna.

The AXIEM Solution

The local AWR software team worked with Toshiba to implement AXIEM simulator into their design process. With AXIEM, the Toshiba team was able to cut their design time from as much as three months down to eight weeks.

AXIEM’s simulation results matched measurements so closely that Toshiba was able to accurately predict performance, thereby cutting the number of manufacturing prototypes needed and significantly reducing manufacturing costs as well as design time.

Toshiba is now able to achieve superior antenna performance. The strict time and budget constraints that hindered the design team’s ability to fine-tune performance measurements are no longer an issue as AXIEM cut the time it takes to run performance measurements from several days to less than a day, helping them to achieve and even surpass their final goals within a reasonable time period.

Additionally, AXIEM’s advanced simulation capabilities enabled Toshiba designers to make advanced performance measurements such as frequency bandwidth, gain, radiation pattern, half width, front-to-back (F/B) ratio, and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR). This further helped them to meet the specifications defined by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).
